After breakfast you might like to take a horse ride along the beach...this is an optional extra and some of you might like to make a weekend of this and stay on in our accommodations here and maybe hold your own mid winter solstice celebrations for Saturday night.
This is a very special uniquely New Zealand event and should be celebrated, if it is raining and the stars cannot be viewed we will party at the café with the guitars and the saxophone!
The Maori new year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. Celebrations in Northland include everything from art and fashion shows to indigenous food festivals and night tours of the celestial skies. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June. This occurs on 27 June 2006, 16 June 2007 and so on...
